World Nobles in the "Battle for Kosovo"

Serbian political elite, including both its ruling and the opposition part, is "defending Kosovo and Metohija" with all its might. Every self-respecting member of the elite is vowing they will not give Kosovo and Metohija away, swearing they will refuse to recognize potential independence of Kosovo, as if the independence depended on their recognition only. Head of the Serbian Government, who is not sure whether he will vote at the elections, is readying for the new "Battle of Kosovo". This time he will be fighting the Americans, and not the Turks. President of the Republic, on his election campaign for a second mandate, is swearing his allegiance to the Kosovo covenant and preamble of the Constitution, without ever stopping to wonder at the specific weight of his statement that he would "never, never, absolutely never" recognize Kosovo independence. The minister of education has issued more public statements on Kosovo than on the education system in Serbia. The Minister for Kosovo and Metohija is always "giving directives" as to what measures the Security Council must undertake, or what European Union should do, as if they had nothing better to do than execute his "orders".
It cannot be disputed that in the propagandist war for "Kosovo and Metohija", the political elite is showing certain signs of naïve and unpremeditated inventiveness. Belgrade was

recently flooded with billboards showing pictures of great international statesman and short quotations from their rich arsenal of statements, put into service of "Kosovo defense". Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and others smiled at citizens of Belgrade even on trams and busses.
This manipulation of names of great leaders may be a politically minute and fine indication that Serbian political elite is not equal to the occasion or is even incompetent to face the challenges of its time.
They embarrassed themselves even more by invoking important figures of British and French 20th century politics - Churchill and de Gaulle. Had they done a little research, they would have at least learned that Churchill, who had a deep understanding of the United Kingdom's interests and was defending them, participated in negotiations with the Irish, which lead to a two-step creation of the republic of Ireland. And this was not the first instance of (mis)use of general de Gaulle's name in Serbia. Several

decades ago, petty local politicians spread the tale of a close personal friendship between the symbol of French fight against fascism and Serbian quisling Draza Mihajlovic!
Now the name of the French statesman is used for political propaganda, while forgetting some elementary facts. De Gaulle, for instance, had enough diplomatic wisdom, political nerve and sensitivity to France's greatness to withdraw from the bloody war in Algeria, which was tearing apart the French society and the state. In doing so, he changed the obsolete political system in France and risked his own life. Unlike Serbia, institutions of the French state managed to save his life even from assaults of members of special French army paratroopers. He "lost" Algeria, but saved France.
Serbian political elite can - though it should not - do whatever it wants. Elementary human decency, if not political correctness (which does not live here) would demand that persons like general de Gaulle should not be harnessed in the service of Kosovo policy or be calling for another "battle of Kosovo". It is too late, and also hopeless. This would benefit Serbian citizens, so that they would not feel embarrassed or be ashamed some day for the things done in their name.
